💳 How does a POS terminal work?
For customers, it seems simple, almost magical. Yet the confirmation beep hides a sophisticated technological and banking ecosystem.
The customer experience
• Insert or tap your card, or use contactless.
• Enter your PIN if required.
• Hear the confirmation beep.
• Take your card and receipt.
Payment completed: simple and fast, but only the visible tip of the iceberg.
Behind the scenes
In seconds, the terminal coordinates a secure conversation between your card or phone, the terminal reading and encrypting data, the merchant's acquiring bank, a payment network such as Visa, Mastercard or GIMAC, your issuing bank and a payment platform.
Key technical steps
Initiation and authentication
You present the card. The terminal reads secure data and requests a PIN if needed. The card verifies the PIN, which is never transmitted in clear text.
Encryption and transmission
Sensitive data are immediately encrypted. The terminal sends an authorisation request.
Routing and authorisation
The request travels through the payment network to your bank, which checks card validity, available balance or limit and possible fraud signals in real time. It returns approval or decline within milliseconds.
Finalisation
The terminal receives the response. If approved, it prints or sends a receipt and beeps. The money has not yet transferred: this is a pre-authorisation.
Clearing and settlement
At day-end, the merchant closes the terminal. Transactions are submitted in batches and funds are credited within one to two business days after interbank fees.
Connectivity
• GPRS/3G/4G: suitable for mobile merchants.
• Ethernet/Wi-Fi: fixed premises.
• Telephone lines: an older standard being phased out.
• Dedicated lines: high reliability for large volumes.
Security at the heart of the system
The terminal is an electronic safe using PCI DSS, end-to-end encryption, certificate authentication and tokenisation for contactless mobile payments.
What next?
Terminals are evolving into smartphone or tablet readers, Pay-by-Link services and payments integrated with business applications.
A POS terminal is an intelligent device that authenticates, encrypts and transmits transactions through a complex financial ecosystem in seconds, supporting trust between customers, merchants and banks.
