Virtual Account
Hello, dear community, and welcome to our weekly meeting. Today we will discuss virtual accounts.
An analogy
Imagine your business is N'Djamena's central market, Adalla market or Dembé market. There is only one main cash desk, but to avoid confusion each important wholesaler—fabric, grain or motorcycle parts—has a small dedicated desk:
• Desk 1 → Alhadji Moussa, rice and millet.
• Desk 2 → Fatima, wax-print fabrics.
• Desk 3 → Ibrahim, motorcycle parts.
And so on.
Retailers pay at their wholesaler's desk. At day-end, all desks transfer their money to the central desk, the master account. As manager, you know exactly how much each wholesaler received and can send a clear statement: today you received CFA 8,450,000 from 42 customers.
The virtual account
A virtual account is a digital sub-account that does not physically exist like a conventional bank account, but is linked to one real bank account: the master or settlement account.
✔ Money always flows through the master account, which holds the funds.
✔ Each virtual account has a unique account number.
✔ That number lets the bank or fintech automatically identify the customer, wholesaler or invoice associated with each incoming transfer.
The wholesalers feel that they have dedicated accounts, while the money is centralised in one account.
Another example
A brewery in Chad manages several wholesalers and wants better tracking. As its accountant, you use virtual accounts:
• Assign a dedicated virtual-account number to each wholesaler.
• Retailers transfer directly to their wholesaler's number.
• Funds reach the brewery's master account.
Your system automatically associates, for example:
CFA 2,500,000 received → wholesaler Djim → invoice #INV-2026-0345.
• Show a virtual balance in real time.
• Block, limit or redirect flows by virtual account without touching the real account.
Major benefits for the brewery
• Better customer experience: wholesalers feel like VIPs with dedicated virtual accounts.
• Almost instant accounting reconciliation: fewer errors and disputes.
• Better fraud prevention: every flow is traced to a customer.
If your business manages wholesalers' cash flows, why not ask your bank about virtual accounts?
